Not the other white meat. Our pork comes from pigs on pasture who exercise, get sunshine, eat a blend of soy-free, organic grain, and otherwise obtain much of their diet from foraging (when possible). The result is a deep red meat with beautiful fat content and well-developed flavor.
Why purchase a hog share?
You are buying part of an animal, and you get the meat at wholesale value, while still getting to control which cuts you receive. That means the more expensive cuts are the same price as ground meat. You own everything on that part of the animal (if you want it), so you are entitled to bones, fat, and organs, in addition to the meat.
How does this work?
The deposit secures your share, and then we will bill you the remainder once the animals are processed and we know the hanging weight. We will send you a reminder when we bring the animals in for processing so you can call your cut order in to the processor. After the meat is ready–it can take 1-2 weeks–we will bring the meat back to the farm and make arrangements for you to pick it up.
How much meat to expect:
Our pigs average 190-220 lbs hanging weight, so the amount of space you need will depend on your share size and what you want from your part of the animal. If you choose not to get any bones, fat, or organs back, you can expect to lose about 25-30% from hanging weight to packaged weight.
We recommend to plan 1 cubic foot of freezer space for every 35 lbs of meat. If you're like most people and don't have much freezer space, there are often great deals to be found on Craigslist for deep freezers. The money you save on buying bulk meat shares will pay for the freezer!
